THE DECOMPRESSION BREATH: When I first learned the THE DECOMPRESSION BREATH: When I first learned the Decompression Breath from @foundationtraining I got addicted to it because I could feel it opening up the space in my chest, between my shoulders & parts of my spine that are hard to reach. I could feel it opening my entire body, like undoing a knot from the center out. It was feeding slack to all my joints, all the way out to my fingers & toes. It felt like a fascial adjustment, not just working the muscles, bones & organs, but a total web of change. I had done many different pranayamas & breath work patterns but nothing gave me an opening like this, AND it was staying with me. The new awareness woke me up to what was possible, helped me realize when I was compressing & crowding in on myself, & gave me a tool to disrupt the pattern. If I had been slumping, not breathing or getting tight inside, I would take a couple decompression breaths & open the whole thing up again.

When I was teaching it, I described it like undoing a knot from the inside out.

This is an image from @thejillmiller ‘s new book, "Body by Breath.” I saw this image & was like, “Yup, this is what I was experiencing.” You can see the fascia connecting everything, which shows why breath work can have such an impact.

There are many forms of breath work & the Decompression Breath, for me, has primarily been about getting the “apparatus” working well again... like oiling an old leather bicycle seat... getting it flexible, shiny, supple again... or refurbishing an accordion...

This image helps us understand how the ENTIRE body participates in breathing, not just our lungs, our diaphragm, or our belly... what isn't shown here is how the fascia extends all the way out of the torso into the arms & legs...

"Fascial behavior is sometimes compared to the invisible pull of dark matter. Everything is suspended and surrounded by this connecting tissue, and yet its transparent filminess blinds us to its interconnecting attributes. The diaphragm's motion impacts structures near and far in the galaxy of your body, and your fascia's ubiquity explains why a breath can be felt from the pelvic floor to the inner skull." - @thejillmiller

STRUCTURE & ENERGY | INSIGHT & ACTION: "In Sanskri STRUCTURE & ENERGY | INSIGHT & ACTION:
"In Sanskrit, there is a word—vichara: to develop insight into how things are. And that insight sets you free. Not so much faith in a deity, not even extraordinary mystical experiences." - Swami Sarvapriyananda

Foundation Training is an incredible tool for getting insight into how things are. It asks you to be present in your body, like in every cell of your being, and with that awareness comes an insight into how things are in there. Then it gives us tools for working with what we find and creating a new path forward based on the insight we got.

LEVEL 1 | PHASE 2 & 3:
We will learn how to counteract gravity and how to create tensioned length.

Phase 2 | How to Counteract Gravity:
- Focus on the impact of gravity, learn how to counteract it and how to use the pull of gravity on your body as an opportunity.
- Learn to identify where you are collapsing into gravity & the patterns where you are moving passively into compression.
- Counteract hip external rotation (turning out) and shoulder internal rotation (turning in) that impinge on nerves near the joints.
- Learn to challenge our center of gravity by integrating dynamic movement.
- Establish a core that remains at your center.

Phase 3 | How to Create Tensioned Length:
- Understand and feel proper glute functioning.
- Re-pattern isolated glute clenching to posterior muscle chain integration.
- Find controlled tension in muscles when they are stretched long to generate space and stability rather than create compressed tightness.
- Focus on tensioned length in the muscle chains.
- Lead from your hips so transitions strengthen your core and develop the posterior chain.

- Train the body eccentrically and feel space for nerves, joints and compression areas of pain and injury open up AND feel your concentric strength improve!
- Practice fundamental and foundational movement patterns, that when done well, enable the body to do all other patterns and movement languages well.
- Learn to move in ways that build you up instead of break you down.
- Feel your posture change as you basically give yourself a bodywork session that opens up the fascia, aligns joints into excellent biomechanical position, makes structural space for the channels of the Chinese Medicine system to flow, and gives you access to your inherent strength.
- Strength train range of motion and feel the safety that gives the nervous system to allow patterns of holding and tension to unwind.
- Work on lung volume and simultaneously realign the shoulders through breathing mechanics and feel shoulder issues resolve.
- Strengthen the neck and whole body to support the head carriage and feel how the vagus nerve and diaphragm, respond, allowing you more ease in changing states.
- Learn to counteract gravity’s downward pull and feel the bodies in-built antigravity system turn on.
- Feel the change in your emotions and energy shift as the body comes out of being compressed, small, and denying its greatness. Like coming back to who you are.
- Enhance grip strength through activating all the muscular chains involved in the whole sleeve of the arm all through the torso.
- Work on tension, your ability to not be overly tense and also not be floppy, but engaged just perfectly and in control over it.
- Practice with stress and being able to positively adapt to it.

Foundation Training is something that you can do that helps you do all that you want to do with your body even better. It’s a movement practice, but it’s almost more like self-done Rolfing / chiropractic / acupuncture. #foundationtraining #therapy

LEARNING HOW TO MOVE: One of the greatest things F LEARNING HOW TO MOVE:
One of the greatest things Foundation Training has given me is in learning how to move, not just in my practice, but in my life. When I was 25, I got into Iyengar Yoga because of the attention to alignment. I had some injuries that were hurting me in my yoga practice and Iyengar yoga had the answers through learning alignment. I built incredible awareness internally from that practice, but something wasn’t translating. Although my poses were beautiful, I wasn’t changing how I sat, walked, ran, stood, reached, picked things up… I could do a practice that helped me feel better but then I’d recreate that pain and tightness through how I was moving in my life.

Our posture and our movement patterns are really what mold our body. If we don’t address that, then we are constantly chasing symptoms through doing a movement practice that is focused on isolated strengthening and stretching that is separate from our lives, and then recreating the problem though the way we are living. Foundation Training taught me, truly, how to move in a way that builds me up instead of breaks me down, it was the bridge between all that I had learned being separate from my life to being integrated into my life.

Foundation Training gives you a strong structural foundation on which you can build a baseline for any practice, sport, or lifestyle. It is not in competition with other modalities, it is an adjunct that is designed to support you so that everything else becomes easy to do

I did this hike alone, went out to this beach alone, set up my camera, had a beautiful time practicing, and then went home… I loved my day… I used to have a really hard time all the time and I didn’t like myself…I watch this and I see how it has changed… how present I am. How right there in the moment I am. A lot of this change happened for me inside the container of having a practice. It’s been a lot of years of having a practice… about 17 years! Different practices, still me. Now it’s Foundation Training! Winter series begin in Feb! Hope to see you there!

SPACE, BREATH & THE NERVOUS SYSTEM: Our body is mo SPACE, BREATH & THE NERVOUS SYSTEM: Our body is molded by our posture & our movement patterns. Our nervous system & our perception of ourselves dictate our posture & our movement patterns. The nervous system needs space to function well.

Our breathing patterns are like a stone being dropped into a pool of water, the ripples move from the center, outward, affecting every tissue, fluid, & function in the field of the body.

The lungs need the rib basket to be able to hold itself expansively so they can expand into the space, unfurling their tissue to receive the breath on the inhalation.

As the breath fills the body, the axial skeleton expands, wider & longer to make way for it. The vertebrae need space between them to allow the nerves to carry messages to our arms, legs, organs, & brain. Because our breath movement surrounds the spine & the spaces of the major nerve plexuses, if our breathing is limited or restricted, we can experience spinal issues, shoulder & arm issues, neck issues, pelvis & leg issues, organ & emotional issues stemming from compression around the nervous system.

The Decompression Breath from Foundation Training trains all of the muscles of respiration to participate in creating expansion & space, AND to be able to hold the body expansively, like a sort of suspension network. As we do this, our perception of ourself changes because we become aware of so much more of ourselves.

There are many different forms of breath-work & each of them is valuable & creates something different. The Decompression Breath is therapy for the entire breathing mechanism, it’s something you do that makes it capable of doing all the other things really well. When we do that, the ripples move outward to affect the entire body.

If our structure offers the nervous system support & safety through creating space & suspension, it can release a pattern inside that safety. We can’t let go of a pattern of it isn’t safe to. What is even cooler, is to do the decompression breath while doing functional movement patterns!

WINTER FOUNDATION TRAINING COURSES! I designed th WINTER FOUNDATION TRAINING COURSES!
I designed these courses based off of what I personally need as a student to be really successful with this material. Each class sequentially and systematically builds off the last so all the new learning & the new awarenesses have time to integrate and the body gets stronger weekly and gains the ability to do more challenging work through steadily being built up. We do these fabulous anatomy lectures that build the students up to be able to make choices within themselves on “how” to work towards what they are wanting to create. AND we get the one on one time together because I like to have a relationship with each student, be a part of their path, and help meet their unique needs. I think these courses are awesome!!

WINTER FOUNDATION TRAINING COURSES: This song, Rec WINTER FOUNDATION TRAINING COURSES: This song, Reckoner, by Radiohead, was introduced to me by Micah Dash, a pro-climber who I met on a climbing trip in the Red River Gorge & climbed with in Mexico and in Indian Creek, Utah, and who died at 32 in a massive avalanche, while climbing the east face of Mt. Edgar on the Gongga Shan, massif, located in western Sichuan Province, China. We listened to this song on repeat while smoking freshly rolled cigarettes after long days of climbing. We just couldn’t get enough of this song!

I was having a reckoning with myself because I was recovering from an injury to my foot, all the metatarsals had dislocated and there was a fracture near the tarsal joint. Multiple surgeons had told me I may never walk again and definitely wouldn’t climb again. Here I was climbing better than I had ever before… I think that injury has been one of the single most formative events in my life and was just one of many injuries I would go on to find my way through.

I got into Foundation Training because of a spinal “disorder” called spondylolisthesis which was a painful situation in my lower back, but Foundation Training didn’t only help me with that, it also fixed:

- plantar fasciitis
- painful knees going down stairs / 🏔️
- painful hamstring attachments
- sacroiliac joint pain
- sciatica
- constant locked up feeling thoracic spine
- tight stuck upper shoulders
- some nervy stuff in my arms
- re-occurring debilitating neck pain

I think because I have recovered from so many serious things, I hold that possibility open for anyone who comes to these courses. ❤️

WINTER FOUNDATION TRAINING SERIES: Here I am demo WINTER FOUNDATION TRAINING SERIES: Here I am demoing the forward bend. It’s pretty wild that I can do this because I tore both of my hamstring attachments in my first yoga teacher training and ten years later, I still had constant pain at the base of my sit bones where they attached. Practicing the Founder completely changed that and I can do this now!

THE RISK:
When I first started to teach Foundation Training it felt like a really big risk because I didn’t know a single other person who had even heard of it and the ideas and principles seemed different and sometimes opposite of what other movement systems and teachers that I deeply respected were teaching. I had some serious stuff going on in my body that I was unsuccessfully changing & when I started reading Eric Goodman’s first book, he was saying things that I felt were true from my own internal experiences but that I had been told were wrong so I wasn’t allowing myself to follow my own knowing. Everything he shared made sense, it was like epiphanies going off with each sentence I read & it was revolutionizing the way that I had been thinking about the body, but it was different than the current status quo. I wanted to be using my body like that, I just was having this fear of breaking away from what I had been taught... so I got really excited & I risked it with myself & when these profound shifts started happening in me, I then started risking it by sharing it with others.

THE WILDERNESS:
“True belonging means that we must sometimes stand alone in our decisions and beliefs despite our fear of criticism and rejection. Belonging so fully to yourself that you are willing to stand alone is a wilderness—an untamed, unpredictable place of solitude and certainty. It is a place as dangerous as it is breathtaking, a place as sought after as it is feared.”

- Brene Brown
THE MYTH OF NORMAL: “The word ‘normal’ has THE MYTH OF NORMAL:
“The word ‘normal’ has an entirely proper usage—when we refer to something that’s natural & healthy & necessary. As a physician, I can tell you that outside of a normal range of physiological parameters, life is not possible. You know, outside of a certain range of body temperature, or blood acidity, or blood pressure, we can’t live. So that’s the normal range—healthy & natural, that can sustain life & health. Now the myth comes in—in our culture we assume that the way we live, & the way this culture is organized, [its] values..., and how to conduct ourselves in it, [is the] norm, [because] that’s how we do it. Statistically it’s the norm. So therefore [we assume] it's also natural & healthy. What I am suggesting is that what is considered normal in this society is actually toxic to human well-being in the psychological, physiological & spiritual sense. So the second meaning of ‘the myth of normal’ is the assumption, therefore, that people who get sick, who get illness mentally or physically, are considered abnormal. I’m saying, no, those are normal responses to an abnormal environment." - Gabor Maté

BACK TO OUR NATURE:
Foundation Training is a system designed to get us back to our nature by training movement patterns that the body is designed to do & we undergo a total physical resurrection as a result of that. It’s not our culture’s “normal,” way of posture & movement patterns, which is largely why our culture is having so much physical dis-ease, but it’s incredibly natural. When we have separated ourselves from something inherent, it becomes radical to return to it.

Foundation Training can seem complicated when you first get into it but after a while of practicing it, you realize it is simple & that these core principles are underlying all movement patterns from simple to very complex. These patterns, when you work on being able to do them well, basically eradicate all these other issues that happen if we don't get these primary patterns down. For example, I don't practice yoga anymore but I am able to do every pose effortlessly & pain free... my body just works now.

I'm not even sure if I should be letting him do that much. I'm pretty sure I'm not supposed to!

Then we had acupuncture from Caitlin Isbister! After the treatment, he was so comfy... I've never seen him that comfy.

The GoFundMe has nearly made it to $5,000! We are 1/3 of the way to our goal, but I'm already feeling so much better. It is so relaxing, hopeful and safe. It feels like my heart can do what it wants to and freely offer him the help he needs.

Here are some pictures of Obi and Caitlin during the acupuncture treatment and of him after!

The GoFundMe link is in my bio if you would like to be part of helping Obi!

6 days ago the neurologists told me that although Obi had shown lots of little improvements, he wasn’t where he needed to be at this point. They felt he should be able to stand on his own and walk on his own.

That day I tried seeing if he could push up into a sit. He tried a couple times but cried in pain. I stopped because, although he wanted to keep trying, it was hurting more with each try.

The next day, we tried again & he was able to push up towards a sit without pain... we pushed up & laid back down over & over. (like doggie push-ups!)

3 days ago the neurologists decided to up the dose of prednisone. Saying that this 3rd week is a critical week for him. He needs to be standing & walking by the end of it otherwise, it’s time to make some hard decisions.

First day on a higher dose of prednisone & he was able to stand! I had the “Help ‘Em Up” harness on him & I tried going outside with him... he mostly dangled from it, his legs, limp and lifeless... (the disparity between his gorgeous, courageous & willful heart and his empty legs made me have to face down, pillow cry, sob hard, for awhile)... Second day on the higher dose & he was up with a little help, standing on his own, walking on his own, trotting! I was just trying to keep up with him without getting in his way... Learning how to be there for him when he tips, but not get in the way when he is on a roll, is a steep learning curve.

This video is today!! He ROCKS. Look at him go!! He really wants to do this! Watching him work w/ what he has going on is powerful. He is my hero, 100%!

The GoFundMe has reached $3,815!!! The money is transforming our lives. For me, it feels like a big, heart-filled safety net. AND he needs it... pee pads, diapers, harnesses, PEMF therapy, the MRI ($6,000), good food, supplements, acupuncture ($200 for a home visit...he’ll need it 3x per week for awhile)... I am hoping to get him the cold laser therapy too, that thing is $800 to rent for three months to do “at home” treatments... I just don’t feel ready to put him in the car and take him somewhere yet... feels like staying comfy & safe at home is really important.
