STRENGTH, THE HEART & THE DREAM: Sometimes my fear STRENGTH, THE HEART & THE DREAM: Sometimes my fear of loss stops me from risking. When I realize that my fear of losing is stopping me, I find my inner fool who is willing to risk it all, to hope, to invest, to effort toward the dream, even w/ the possibility of loss & potential for failure. 

Some suggest that without the danger of failing, there is no opportunity to soar.

Trungpa Rinpoche encourages us to lead our lives as an experiment. When we approach life as an experiment, we’re willing to try it this way & that way because, either way, we have nothing to lose. Then we can put our whole heart into whatever we do. If we freeze our attitude into for or against, we set ourselves up for stress. Instead, we can go forward w/ curiosity, wondering where this experiment will lead.

LUNG POWER & ACCESS TO WHAT WE ARE CAPABLE OF: Dec LUNG POWER & ACCESS TO WHAT WE ARE CAPABLE OF: Decompression Breathing is the first thing we learn when we begin Foundation Training & it is done while practicing all the FT poses & movements. 

In James Nestor’s book, “Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art,” he writes that lung volume is the single biggest determining factor for life span & quality of life during that span. Bigger lungs = longer lives. 

We take close to 20,000 breaths each day. Every breath impacts how our body functions and how we feel. Doing a practice that increases our lung capacity & volume is an adjustment that affects a movement that we make many thousands of times, which creates significant change. 

Foundation Training approaches breath with a focus on the structural elements of where the lungs live in the rib basket to improve efficiency in respiration. 

Breathing is a huge part of Foundation Training because it is the first step we can take towards autonomy, response-ability (the ability to respond to our circumstances and change the outcome) and better posture. With more expansion in our breath we become more of ourselves, as in, we have access to what we are capable of. 

I’m really into this phrasing lately of having access to what we are capable of because it eludes to our inherent health, not something that we have to force… not that it doesn’t take quite a lot of learning and effort… in fact, the decompression movements in FT directly confront a posture that is squeezed / constricted by gravity & pulled into rigidity out of self-protection and it requires no small effort to open things up, but that process is sort of more like uncovering something that is already astoundingly strong, flexible, able to move w/ maximal results & minimal expenditure of energy… uncovering something codified in our DNA that was significant enough to be passed down through the generations… Rather than pushing to become something we are not, the effort is to discover what we already are. For me, Foundation Training woke me up to what my body could do & feel like that a I had no idea / no experience of prior.

THE BREATH’S METAMORPHIC POTENTIAL: Breathing i THE BREATH’S METAMORPHIC POTENTIAL: 
Breathing is essential to decompression & is an integral element in all the decompression exercises in Foundation Training.  When the body isn’t resisting gravity well & is compressing in on itself / when respiration has been stunted, the body can become compressed & rigid under gravity’s excessive pressure & that reins in every move the body makes. 

When we develop a movement practice, we create a space in our lives to have the opportunity to visit our full movement potential. What we access in our practice then becomes available to us in our every moment. 

In a Foundation Training practice, we get to experience the metamorphic shift in the body that happens when the rib basket & lungs open to their full movement potential. 

When the rib basket opens, the lungs can unfurl their entire oxygen-holding capacity into that space. When the lungs are given an opportunity to reach into their wholeness, they are capable of empowering the appendicular skeleton to do everything that it is capable of doing, & only a ribcage as big & wide as it can get, can ensure that kind of lung power. 

The positions & movements in Foundation Training re-educate the axial skeleton into an expansiveness that enables accurate, effective breathing — retraining the pully systems around the ribcage to give that structure its maximum mechanical advantage, making it as big and wide as it can be so that the lungs have access to what they are capable of.

The movements in @foundationtraining are foundational movements & functional movements. 

FOUNDATIONAL MOVEMENTS: 
When you can do foundational movement patterns well, like the hip hinge, squat, & lat dominant shoulder movements, most other movement patterns open up effortlessly & become available to you. If we are having a problem, a compensation pattern, pain, injury, wear & tear or inflammation, then coming back to these foundational patterns can help sort much of that out. This is an incredible adjunct practice because it can enable you to do all the other stuff you love, really well, recover fast when things get out of whack, & continue doing what you love, sustainably. 

FUNCTIONAL MOVEMENTS: 
The movement patterns you learn in FT are made to be integrated into your life. They are actually the most powerful, bio-mechanically advantageous, & natural moments available to us. Because of their functionality & applicable-ness there’s quite a lot of transformation possible! The movements are literally how you stand, sit, walk, run, kneel, push, lift, pull, squat, carry, & reach!

THIS MOVEMENT: This movement I’m doing in the video is called the Kneeling Rotation. I use it when I am giving Shiatsu Treatments every day. Having something to help me do my work in a way that keeps me feeling good is profoundly valuable to me. I also use this movement to pick my 80 lb Doberman Pinscher up & down off the floor. When Obi was suddenly paralyzed in November, we went down a 7 month-ongoing-healing path & because of FT, I have been able to lift, carry, & help him without injury (except once & I was only limited for a couple days. I learned a lot from that experience about keeping my thoracic curve when lifting to disburse forces better, invaluable lesson.) I’ve never had such a profound connection with an animal as I have with Obi, I love that guy SO MUCH! So it’s been incredibly meaningful to have this practice as a HUGE resource.

Pain, injury, illness, suffering, discomfort, aging, the body changing… these are all thresholds. To acknowledge and cross a new threshold is always a challenge. It demands courage and also a sense of trust in whatever is emerging. It only takes a couple of seconds for life to change irreversibly. Suddenly you stand on completely strange ground and a new course of life has to be embraced, everything that was once so steady, so reliable, must now find a new way of unfolding.

All of these things involve a personal challenge. They are problems, or opportunities, or, as is so often the case, they are problems that also provide opportunities, or opportunities that also present problems. Their common denominator is that all of them require change. Further, the kind of change they require is not straightforward and simple. It is inner change, the kind that calls upon you to do something you don’t know how to do. 

Foundation Training literally helps us create space in the body & that provides the opportunity for us to move towards our “rightness.” From imbalance to balance. It taught me so much & helped me face some serious things that were happening in my body that I didn’t know how to be with. It continues to help me as new things present themselves. It is the best tool I know of to continuously meet the challenges of being in a body as opportunities for moving towards our “rightness.”

NEW STUDIO! This is the new spot! I’m in Greenfi NEW STUDIO! This is the new spot! I’m in Greenfield now! It’s right across from @hawksandreed and @catalpacoffee and above Baker’s Office Supplies! Second floor, in the tree canopy and across the from that open green space. It’s so pretty I can’t stop taking pictures of it! When I first walked in it was super dirty and there were electrical cords everywhere… it was pretty DINGY… but I was so gripped by this feeling of wanting to clean and paint and fix it up that I just HAD TO. The nights after I went to see it I was up in the middle of the night imagining everything I would like to do to see if it could be beautiful and it is!!! YESSSS!!! It is a historical building so the wood floors are just like all the wood floors I learned movement practices on and the smells of restaurants and sounds of local music are in the air, feels like a city in the best way, but it’s really separate and it just feels clean and safe and relaxing… these windows wrap around the whole place… there are twelve of them and if I stand on their ledge, I can hardly reach the top. I really didn’t want to move from the studio in Shelburne Falls, but now I wouldn’t want to go back!! I hope this move makes it more possible for anyone who wanted to come but the drive out to Shelburne Falls was just too much! Come see me for a Shiatsu treatment! Developing a practice is about developing a relationship w/ your body, emotions, thoughts, conditioning... with yourself, which is ultimately a solo endeavor. However, the group's commitment helps tremendously w/ the endurance it takes to weather the storms of a challenging individual task. Knowing that each individual is finding a way to come to the time we have chosen to do this work together & finding a way to work towards something they want for themselves, despite the challenges of life, gives a feeling of "togetherness" that is incredibly supportive. 

Through this commitment, the practice is given an opportunity to integrate into life & creates a dialogue & inquiry into the ways in which we can grow. This learning structure is an opportunity for insight on physical & emotional freedom to flood in. 

A course is the place for a student to make leaps & bounds in their practice.

This format is steeped in the traditions of learning movement, where knowledge is transmitted from teacher to student over time. Courses are set-up to build, which helps both the students & the teacher to develop a relationship & witness growth in their personal practice.  The students & the teacher get to experience the depth that comes from learning with each other year-round. It also opens up the joy of a shared language, experience, & consistent class environment.  This is one of the best platforms for a teacher to truly connect & help their students.

THE FELT SENSE: This last weekend in the Biodynami THE FELT SENSE: This last weekend in the Biodynamic Craniosacral Training that I joined in NYC we started to learn something called "Focusing," which is the work of Gene Gendlin. 

Gene had watched hundreds or thousands of therapy sessions & noticed that the clients who were able to grow, move forward, feel more free of limiting thoughts, beliefs & challenging situations were the ones that were able to access a "felt sense" of what was happening, not the story or the "reasons why" something was happening but the way it felt in their body. This worked whether the therapist was skilled or not!

A felt sense is not just physical, but is composed of sensations, emotional tones, feeling senses & even images. It is the whole bodily sense of something. It is an expression of how we
embody our experience. It also holds the meaning of that experience. Thus it is a realm of embodied meaning. This may be the meaning I give to an experience or a relationship, or the meaning I give my life.

It has been building my sense that I can meet anything & be with anything. It’s an empowering feeling to trust myself / to know I can be w/ hard things, especially hard things that I haven’t met before… & to not need another person to give me the answers, but to be able to access them myself. 

My neck has been hurting & I've been using Focusing to sense what is happening in there. It’s giving me a lot of information about some emotional stuff that I haven’t been sharing / being honest about…. And that really surprised me!
